My, how the tide can change. After eight years of promoting punishments for “hate speech” and claiming the First Amendment doesn’t apply to a long list of “thoughtcrimes,” the Left is finally claiming to care about free speech.
The Left and MSM are now comparing President Trump’s reign to Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. It’s doubly funny, since besides being a false accusation not backed up by arguments, it shows they have no idea what the novel is actually about or free speech is suppressed today.
The comparisons started after the fabulous Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to the President, defended White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s comments about attendance numbers at President Trump’s inauguration.
Spicer claimed the media deliberately underestimated the size of the crowd at President Trump’s inaugural ceremony, as photos later proved. Conway was grilled by NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press, who said President Trump told Spicer to “utter a falsehood” and said the claims about attendance “undermines the credibility” of the entire White House Press office.
“Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck.” Conway replied. “You’re saying it’s a falsehood, and . . . our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave alternative facts to that.”
This left all the fake news outlets calling “alternative facts” an Orwellian phrase, and sales of Nineteen Eighty-Four shot up 9,500 percent on Amazon.
Also part of the “Orwellian” allegations–President Trump is temporarily suspending employees with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Agriculture from giving social media updates and speaking to the press. Idiotic liberals, apparently unaware that your boss can tell you not to discuss departmental changes with the media and general public, whined about it being an oppression of “free speech.” Hopefully President Trump will go through with his plans to cut half the staff at the EPA and do something actually useful for clean air and water instead. Liberals and the Alt-Left Are the True Thought Police
Nineteen Eighty-Four is ingrained in Western consciousness as the epitome of a dystopian, fascist society, so it’s not surprising that the MSM and Leftists jumped from calling Trump a Nazi to calling his White House policies Orwellian. But they have it completely backwards.
In 1984, anything not sanctioned by the Ingsoc (English Socialist) government is deemed a thoughtcrime worthy of investigation by the Thought Police. Today’s Thought Police are SJWs and organizations like Twitter and Facebook that will ban users for posting anything that doesn’t fit the Leftist agenda.
People like Drexel University professor George Ciccariello-Maher are merely reprimanded for tweeting “All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide.” Meanwhile, Brendan Eich was ousted from Mozilla for donating to $1,000 to California’s Proposition 8, which would have banned same-sex marriage in California. Figures on the Alt-Right like Mike Enoch and Emily Youcis were fired for their political views while Marxist professors are given tenure.
During the election, articles were posted on MSM about how to figure out which of your Facebook friends “liked” Trump (so you could delete them from your online life or report them to their work). A news reporter for a Houston Fox affiliate was fired for posting a celebratory message about President Trump on her private Facebook page. Adult Swim cancelled Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace for being politically incorrect and since the guys in MDE voted for Trump. The CEO of Grubhub sent an email to employees after the election that said those who support Trump’s behaviors and his campaign rhetoric should resign. The Internet abounds with other examples of people fired, ridiculed, or harassed for supporting Trump.
Today, try bringing up Martin Luther King, Jr.’s plagiarism or sexual deviancy around the conference table at a large corporation. Say that gender dysphoria is a mental disorder at the water cooler at work–and you’ll likely end up fired for hate speech even though you have the DSM-5 to back it up. Say you want fewer Muslim immigrants in Europe and you’ll end up charged with hate speech like Geert Wilders. Deny the Holocaust in Europe and you’ll go to prison, even if you’re an 87-year-old grandmother.
In 1984, Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth, which is really the Department of Lies. He goes through past newspaper articles to delete facts now deemed to be “untruths.” News stories not approved by IngSoc are permanently deleted. That’s not far from the historical revisionism taught in schools today via Leftist teachers and books like Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, which is used as a textbook in universities. In Orwell’s novel, children are encouraged to inform on their parents for thoughtcrime, which is exactly where we’re headed in today’s government schools. The Left wants even more opportunities for government indoctrination, as they’re now pushing “free” taxpayer-funded preschool and four years of “free” state college.
Another similarity to today’s Totalitarian Left: newspeak, which is “designed to diminish the range of thought.” The Party uses it to control speech and thoughts. By controlling the words one thinks, the Party can make certain concepts literally unthinkable.
In newspeak, things that are bad are “ungood.” A forced labor camp is called a “joycamp.” The Ministry of Peace is perpetually at war. The Ministry of Truth creates propaganda. The secret police who will kill you for crimethink (i.e., committing a thoughtcrime) are the Ministry of Love. A facecrime is a facial expression that suggests one is guilty of a thoughtcrime.
Today’s Totalitarian Left has similar programs. The Southern Poverty Law Center and similar groups claim to fight “hate groups” while being hateful themselves. But people are starting to wake up, especially with alternative media coverage of Leftist violence and double-standards. With President Trump holding fast to his policies and continuing to call out fake news, we finally have a hope that the Leftist police state will come to an end.
