Signs of the Grades in Ceremonial Magick

Performing the rituals in Israel Regardie’s The Golden Dawn or other Ceremonial Magick texts will require that the practitioner know how to give a number of signs, but there is often no reference as to where to find them. These signs were typically given to initiates during initiations. The following are Aleister Crowley’s Signs of the Grades for the  A.’.A.’., which are based on the signs from the Golden Dawn initiatory system (more precisely, the Stella Matutina, a Golden Dawn-inspired order that Regardie was a member of in London).

Neophyte Signs

0° = 0: The Sign of Horus: The Enterer

Take a step forward with the left foot, and thrust the hands forward so they are perpendicular with the floor. This sign is often given when vibrating a god name in order to charge a pentagram.

0° = 0: The Sign of Harpocrates: The Sign of Silence

The right foot is facing forward, with the left foot turned toward the left slightly behind it. Bring the right forefinger to the lips, like telling someone “shhh.” This is often done right after giving the sign of the Enterer, to cut off the energy channel created by charging a symbol.

Elemental Grade Signs

1° = 10: The Sign of Earth: The God Set Fighting

Point your right foot forward and angled slightly out. Your left foot should be pointed left, with the left heel touching the right heel. Raise your right arm up, and slightly in front of you, with your palm facing forward. Put your left arm straight back, at about a 30 degree angle, so that both arms form a straight line. Your palms should be out, with the fingers outstretched and together. Raise your head to look the direction of your raised right hand.
