The Ritual of the Rose Cross

This ritual was given to candidates when they reached the 5=6 degree in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The only tool needed is a stick of incense.

According to Israel Regardie’s The Golden Dawn and Donald Michael Kraig’s Modern Magick, there are five reasons for performing the Ritual of the Rose Cross:

  1. It is a banishing ritual. Unlike the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP), which can attract the attention of astral entities, the Rose Cross works like a curtain by containing your aura, and protects you from unwanted outside influences. It should not be used as a substitute for the LBRP, however.
  2. This curtaining aspect creates a kind of shield of invisibility around you.
  3. It is a good preparation for meditation, since it works by calling forth your higher self.
  4. You can use it for helping people physically or spiritually. Do this by calling up a mental image of the person and placing it in the center of the room. Draw down the light onto the person. After the ritual, command the image to go to the person with peace and healing, taking the grace of Divinity.
  5. If you’re in a negative environment, it will help protect you from the bad energy.

The following diagram shows the directions to move around the room, and the instructions at each corner.

The Ritual of the Rose Cross

1. Start in the center of the room, with a lit stick of incense.

2. Go to the southeast (SE) corner of the temple. Remain facing outward. Make a Rose Cross with the stick of incense, and stab the center of the circle, while vibrating Yeh-hah-shu-ah. It’s best to vibrate “Yeh” while drawing the vertical line, “hah” while drawing the horizontal, “shu” while drawing the circle, and “ah” when stabbing the middle.

3. Keep the incense at the level of the cross. Travel to the southwest (SW) corner, carrying the line the entire way. Again draw the Rose Cross and vibrate Yeh-hah-shu-ah.

4. Carry the line to the northwest (NW) corner, and do the same.

5. Travel to the northeast (NE) corner, and do the same.

6. Travel to the SE corner, to complete the circle draw with the incense, formed at the level of the cross.

7. With the incense still pointed at the center of the cross in the SE, move diagonally across the room to the center, keeping the incense high in the air over your head. When you reach the center, make the Rose Cross above your head, vibrating the name as before.

8. Keeping the incense held high, keep traveling diagonally to the NW corner. Bring the incense down to the center of the Rose Cross there.

9. With the incense still pointed at the center of the cross in the NW, move diagonally across the room to center, this time with the incense pointed down to the ground. When you reach the center, make the Rose Cross beneath you, vibrating the name as before.

10. Keeping the incense pointed down, keep traveling diagonally across the room to the SE corner. Bring the incense up to the center of the Rose Cross there.

11. Travel clockwise, to the SW corner, retracing the line you previously drew with the incense at the cross level. When you reach the SW corner, point to the center of the Rose Cross and vibrate the name again. Do not redraw the Cross.

12. With the incense still pointed at the center of the cross in the SW, move diagonally across the room to center, keeping the incense high in the air over your head. When you reach the center, point the incense to the center of the Cross, and vibrate the name. Do not redraw the Cross.

13. Keeping the incense held high, keep traveling diagonally to the NE corner. Bring the incense down to the center of the Rose Cross there.

14. Move diagonally across the room to center, this time with the incense pointed down to the ground. When you reach the center, stop to vibrate the name as before.

15. Keeping the incense pointed down, keep traveling diagonally across the room to the SW corner. Bring the incense up to the center of the Rose Cross there.

16. Travel clockwise around the room, to the NW, keeping the incense at Cross level. At the corner, point to the center of the circle, but do not vibrate the name or redraw the Cross.

17. Travel to the NE. Point to the center of the Cross.

18. Travel to the SE. Point to the center of the Cross.

19. Travel back to the SW. The incense should be pointed at the center of the Cross. Draw the Rose Cross again, but larger–make it taller, wider, and the circle larger. Vibrate Yeh-hah-shu-ah when drawing the bottom half of the circle, and vibrate Yeh-hoh-vah-shah when drawing the top half of the circle.

20. Move to the center of the temple, and face East. Visualize the four Rose Crosses in the corners, the one above you, and the one below you.

Do the analysis of the Key Word from the Lesser Ritual of the Hexagram, as follows:

With your right arm across your chest, say:
I N R I
Yud, Nun, Resh, Yud.
Virgo, Isis, Mighty Mother,
Scorpio, Apophis, Destroyer,
Sol, Osiris, slain and risen.
Isis, Apophis, Osiris.

Fold your hands together in the center of your chest and say:
IAO!

Give the Sign of Osiris Slain, and say:
The Sign of Osiris Slain.

Give the Sign of the Mourning of Isis, and say:
The Sign of the Mourning of Isis.

Give the Sign of Apophis and Typhon, and say:
The Sign of Apophis and Typhon.

Give the Sign of Osiris Risen, and say:
The Sign of Osiris Risen.

Stretch your arms out to the side, and bring them back to the Sign of Osiris Slain, saying:
L, V, X. LUX. The Light of the Cross.
